A new WhatsApp update will stop working on some millions of older smartphones. Therefore, WhatsApp will become permanently inaccessible from January 1, 2021, onwards.

A new WhatsApp update will stop working on some millions of older smartphones. Therefore, WhatsApp will become permanently inaccessible from January 1, 2021, onwards. However, some users of older devices will still be able to access WhatsApp by updating to the latest software.

WhatsApp has yet again announced that is withdrawing support for certain older devices that are currently compatible with the messaging app.

Older Android and iPhone devices will be no longer support the latest version of the app. This will force owners to either update their mobile operating system or buy a new smartphone.

WhatsApp will drop their support for any iPhone not running iOS 9 or newer. Also, any phone not running at least Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will no longer be able to open. Therefore, it can not operate the Facebook-owned app also.

iPhone

WhatsApp also announced that the iPhone 4 and models will not be able to access the messaging app from the beginning of next year. The iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 5C, 6, and 6S can all be updated to iOS9, hence they will be able to support WhatsApp once updated.

Android

Android phone users have not been spared either. WhatsApp will no longer work on Android devices running Android 4.0.3 includes the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire, and LG Optimus Black or older versions of the operating system. If users using the above devices they must back up their chats before January 1, 2021, if they want to retain them.
