On January 31, 2020, the very first coronavirus patients identified in Italy. The first case was two Chinese tourists in Rome tested positive for the virus. However, the third covid 19 cases reported one week later an Italian man, who came back to Italy from Wuhan, China.
On January 31, 2020, the Italian government imidiately declared a state of emergency and suspended all flights to and from China. On February 22, 2020, the first covid 19 deaths reported in Italy. The deadly virus had spread to all regions of Italy by the beginning of March.
The Italian government put under lockdown the region of “Lombardy together with 14 additional northern and central provinces in Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, and Marche” on March 8, 2020,. However, the government extended the lockdown measures to the whole country, two days later. It took two months to re-open the region.
The president of the Italian National Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro, announced that the pandemic had reached its peak in the country on March 31, 2020.
The Italian Prime Minister Conte announced a new lockdown on November 4, 2020, dividing the country into three zones depending on the severity of the pandemic.
- Red Zones: Aosta Valley and Calabria, were put under a strict lockdown. Similar to the previous one which was implement from March to May 2020.
- Orange Zones: Apulia and Sicily, were put under lesser strict lockdown.
- Yellow Zone: the rest of the country was declared with a few restrictions.
On March 9, 2020, Alessia Bonari, a nurse from Grosseto who worked at a hospital in Milan, posted on Instagram stating that she was physically strained from being overworked and was scared to work after treating over 10,000 patients who have tested positive.
